Memphis Fireman Dies
Posted: 4/20/2005 10:09:59 PM

The Memphis Fire Department is in mourning. On Wednesday a nine-year veteran of the department died suddenly while on the job. 38-year-old David O'Conner collapsed while driving a fire truck. The truck ran up on a curb; another fireman jumped over the center console, grabbed the wheel and brought the fire truck to a stop. Firemen dragged O'Conner from the truck and began CPR. O'Conner was rushed to Methodist Central Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Doctors think O'Conner may have died from a heart attack or a blood clot that went to his lungs.

Alvin Benson is Deputy Director of the Memphis Fire Department, "Its always tough. It's absolutely heart wrenching. Firefighters are like a family, you know? We're a family." O'Conner is survived by his wife. He is the fifth member of Fire Station 7 to die in the line of duty; Fire Station 7 has now suffered the loss of more firefighters than any other station in Memphis.
