To the Memphis Fire Department, I am sorry for your loss and know his presence will be missed by all of you too. I was very impressed and touched by the comradere shown by all firefighters. You proved that the deaths of Lt. Kirk and Private Zachary were not merely co-workers but brothers.
THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO AND FOR PUTTING YOUR LIVES ON THE LINE FOR ME AND MY FAMILY. GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERY FIREFIGHTER AND THEIR FAMILIES.

Comments: Again my heart aches for my old home city of Memphis. Station #55 on Riverdale was the station that was nearest my home in 2000 when Firefighters Lerma and Blakemore were gunned down along with Deputy Peete. At that time I grieved as if they were family members of mine, as my baby son is a firefighter and acts of this nature really hit me hard. My heart is broken now as I read the stories about the tracic fire that claimed two more of Memphis' Bravest and Finest. My prayers are going up for the families and the brothers (firefighters) of these two heros. I hope the death penalty is sought for this crime and if a letter from me to Mr. Ashcroft would benefit the cause I will be more than happy to write one. Again, my most sincere condolences. May God bless you all.

Comments: When the Lord was creating Firefighters, he was into his sixth day of overtime when an angel appeared and said, "Your doing a lot of fiddling around on this one." And the Lord said "Have you read the specification of this person? Firefighters have to be able to go for hours fighting fires or tending to a person that the usual every day person would never touch, while putting in the back of their mind the circumstances. They have to be able to move at a second's notice and not think twice of what they are about to do, no matter what danger. They have to be in top physical condition at all times, running on half-eaten meals, and they must have six pairs of hands." "It's not the hands that are causing me problems," said the Lord, "it's the three pairs of eyes a Firefighter has to have."

"That's on the standard model?" asked the angel.

The Lord nodded. "One pair that sees through the fire and where they and their fellow Firefighters should fight the fire next. Another pair here in the side of the head to see their fellow Firefighters and keep them safe. And another pair of eyes in the front so that they can look for the victims caught in the fire that need their help."

"Lord" said the angel, touching his sleeve, "Rest and work on this tomorrow."

"I can't, said the Lord, "I already have a model that can carry a 250 pound man down a flight of stairs and to safety from a burning building, and can feed a family of five on a civil service paycheck."

The angel circled the model of the Firefighter very slowly, "Can it think?"

"You bet," said the Lord. "It can tell you the elements of a hundred fires; and can recite procedures in their sleep that are needed to care for a person until they reach the hospital. And all the while they have to keep their wits about themselves. This Firefighter also has phenomenal personal control. They can deal with a scene full of pain and hurt, coaxing a child's mother into letting go of the child so that they can care for the child in need. And still they rarely get the recognition for a job well done from anybody, other than from fellow Firefighters."

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek of the Firefighter. "There's a leak", she pronounced. "Lord, it's a tear. What's the tear for?" asked the angel.

"It's a tear from bottled-up emotions for fallen comrades. A tear for commitment to that funny piece of cloth called the American Flag. It's a tear for all the pain and suffering they have encountered. And it's a tear for their commitment to caring for and saving lives of their fellow man!"

"What a wonderful feature Lord, you're a genius" said the angel.

I Guess that's why we hear people say, after responding to a call "Thank GOD for Firefighters"

Comments: Brave men. Lt. Kirk and Firefighter Zachary were brave men. That is the characteristic that is required of a man to do what they did. Without regard for the lives they possessed, and concern for the life of one they had never met, they risked theirs to save another. That is a characteristic of bravery and the only way I can define "Heroes." I did not know Lt. Kirk. I wish I had. I did know Firefighter Zachary. "Zach" is what I called him. At a time like this, however, I feel like I have lost two brothers. I have indeed lost two "Brothers." My prayers and thoughts go out to both of their families. I pray that God gives them all the comfort they need right now. Our department mourns the loss of these two heroes. But, we will continue to do for those people unknown to us, what Lt. Kirk and "Zach" gave their lives for. God bless and protect the families of Lt. Kirk and "Zach."

Bilbrey was the number 2 chief before his retirement in 1958, I know the trials and tribulations of our wonderful firemen. Lt. Kirk happened to hang some beautiful wallpaper for me about two months ago, and I know that Chief Bilbrey would have given him a thumbs up for his heroism as well as his ability to do something to enrich my life. His conversations as well as his superb capacity to make wallpaper come alive will keep him in my memory as long as I live.

Comments: In Harms Way,
(BeBe Winans, Rhett Lawrence, Margaret Bell-Byars)

Undying love you've given to me
Seen in me things I would never have seen
I don't understand why you care so much, it's all a mystery
Time and time again I ask myself
What have I done to deserve such wealth
The price you paid, I could never repay your generosity
In wanting to save me
In order to save the day
Because of love you placed yourself
In harm's way
It's truly beyond me
Left without a word to say
What kind of love would place itself
In harm's way?
When I was down you came and lifted me
When I was bound, yes, you set me free
Things that you do makes it clear to see
It's all a master plan
Oh, no greater love that I've come to know
And when I refuse, you still love me so
With open arms you came and rescued me
And erased all the pain, yes all the pain
What kind of love would place itself
And risk your life for love's sake?
What kind of love just takes on all the blame?
It seems to be so easy
It hurts sometimes but you never let go
You will to love in spite of all you know
You know, you know

What great price paid by a man.
To the many Fire Fighters Everyday, Everywhere.

Thank You!

Comments: "The Last Alarm"
Dedicated to the children of firefighters who have died in the line of duty.

My daddy was a fireman
He drove a big red truck
And when He'd go to work each day
He'd say "mother", wish me luck"
Then dad would not come home again
Till, sometime the next day
But the thing that bothered me the most
Was the things some folks would say
"A firemans life is easy
He eats and sleeps and plays
And Sometimes he doesn't fight a fire for days and days"
When I first heard these comments
I was too young to understand
Cause I knew, when people had trouble
Dad was there to lend a hand
Then my father went to work one day
And he kissed us all good-bye
But little did we realize
That night we would all cry
My father gave his life that night
When the floor gave way below
And I wondered why he'd risk his life
For someone he didn't even know
But now I realize
The greatest gift a man can give
Is to lay his life upon the line
So that someone else might live
So as we go from day to day
And we pray to God above
Say a prayer for your local fireman
He may save the ones you love
"author unknown"

My wife and I would like to extend our condolonces to the Kirk and Zachary families, it is so hard to lose a brother

I have known Lt. Trent Kirk since I became close friends with his oldest daughter in 5th grade,I have known him ever since. He was a great dad and a heck of a firefighter and we will miss him very much. It is very hard for his family and fellow firefighters to deal with his loss it was so sudden and we didn't even get to say goodbye, But we all half to try to accept that this was Gods plan.He surved his purpose that God had planned for him. I understan the pain that his family is going through because my dad is a firefighter for the Collierville Fire Department and i wouldn't even want to think about losing him. My love and sympathy goes out to all of the Kirk family,Hope, and Memphis Fire Department.

Comments: IN MEMORIUM

I lost a dear friend today that I never even knew. Oh, I recognized the face, I’d seen so many times before. Covered with soot, dirt and sweat, and showing the pain from a body pushed way beyond the limit. I didn’t know his hobbies or his favorite foods, until today I didn’t even know the name. It didn’t matter at the moment if the name was Bill or Larry or Monica or Sue. What mattered most was that the loss was a fellow firefighter.

You see, being a firefighter is much more than showing up for work and drawing a paycheck. It’s a commitment to your fellow man to be there when you are needed. It’s a brotherhood of individuals with a common bond of service to others and a giving of your all so that others don’t suffer. It’s rushing into situations that everyone else is doing everything they can to escape. It’s fighting with your entire heart, body and soul to save the life that is so desperately in need of your tender, loving care. It’s living the very embodiment of the term “public servant”.

My friend lived that commitment to the fullest, which is how I learned the name. In his final call he rushed in as he had so many times before. This time however, he paid the ultimate price. He had always been there for others, but now we gather for him. This we do to pay our respects for a hero; not because he died, but because he lived and served his fellow man well. As we pay our respects we pause and realize that for some greater reason unknown to us, there lies my friend instead of me. As I ponder the events that led me here, words alone cannot express the intense sorrow and yet, overwhelming pride that is felt. Until today, I didn’t know the name but I knew him well… my friend was a fellow firefighter.

The members of Collierville Fire & Rescue extends its most sincere sympathy to the families of our fallen brothers and members of the Memphis Fire Department
